The General Hospital Corporation (MGH) was awarded a $205,735 Project Grant (R21AI180632) from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (CFDA 93.855 Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program) to develop and evaluate an antimicrobial blue light-activatable optical endotracheal tube (optical-ETT) to combat biofilms on endotracheal tubes and prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia. The key objectives are to conduct in vitro studies on the anti-biofilm efficacy of the optical-ETT and determine its anti-biofilm efficacy and safety in a swine model of endotracheal intubation. Successful completion of this 2-year project will provide initial preclinical evidence on the effectiveness and safety of the optical-ETT technology as a novel approach to preventing biofilm formation and eradicating preexisting biofilms on endotracheal tubes.
