This federal Project Grant award of $187,500 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program, supports research examining the relationship between allostatic load, neighborhood disadvantage, and cognitive function trajectories among midlife and older Black Americans. The key objectives of this research project, to be conducted by Xavier University of Louisiana, are to: (1) test the relationship between allostatic load and cognitive function, (2) examine how neighborhood socioeconomic status and racial segregation moderate the allostatic load-cognitive function association, and (3) analyze the interplay between allostatic load, perceived neighborhood stressors, and cognitive function. The research aims to increase understanding of the complex social, environmental, and biological determinants of cognitive function in the Black population, while also contributing to expanding the aging research pipeline through mentoring underrepresented students at Xavier University.
