This federal Project Grant awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853), will provide $535,389 to support research aimed at elucidating the molecular pathways that regulate GABAergic inhibition and seizure susceptibility in the brain.

The funded project will investigate how the FLT3 kinase signaling pathway regulates the development and function of the GABAergic inhibition system, and to what extent FLT3 signaling impacts the onset and recurrence of epileptic seizures in mice. The research will leverage newly-developed neuron-specific genetic mouse models to advance the understanding of FLT3's role in neuronal function and circuit excitability in healthy and epileptic brains. This work is expected to identify new targets for pharmacological intervention to rescue impaired GABAergic inhibition underlying various brain disorders.
