The Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RFCUNY) received a $1,382,278 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants (CFDA 93.242) program. The award supports a mixed-methods, multi-informant study to characterize childhood suicide ideation (SI) and expressions of distress among a diverse sample of 150 children ages 8-12 to improve suicide risk assessment. The study aims to: 1) identify profiles of SI in ethnoracially diverse children using quantitative and qualitative methods; 2) test how child SI profiles predict severity trajectories over time; and 3) examine differences in expressions of distress reported by children and caregivers. RFCUNY is collaborating with sub-awardees at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the University of Texas at Austin to implement the study across sites in New York City and Austin. The project aligns with NIMH's mission to develop culturally and developmentally informed suicide risk assessments for children.
