The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded a $759,581 Project Grant under its Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to The McLean Hospital Corporation, a psychiatric teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. The project, "Harnessing Smartphones for Real-Time Detection of Affective Disturbance and Future Depression Risk in Adolescents," aims to leverage smartphone sensor data and ecological momentary assessments to develop personalized machine learning models that can accurately predict states of high negative affect in the daily lives of adolescents aged 12-16. The goal is to inform the development of personalized, smartphone-delivered interventions to address acute affective distress, and to evaluate whether the passive smartphone data, combined with affective dynamics, can predict individual risk of future depression onset. The award period is from February 1, 2025 to November 30, 2029.
