This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under CFDA Program 93.242 - Mental Health Research Grants provides $2,562,920 to support research examining the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mania and hypomania in bipolar disorder. The University of Pittsburgh, the prime awardee, will conduct a study comparing 40 individuals with bipolar disorder experiencing subsyndromal mania/hypomania to 40 healthy controls. The study aims to 1) assess differences in brain activity, functional and effective connectivity in reward-related and central executive networks during uncertain reward expectancy and approach-avoidance decision-making contexts, 2) measure and compare striatal and prefrontal cortical dopamine release, and 3) examine associations between these neural measures and symptoms of mania/hypomania. This research seeks to elucidate the underlying neurobiology predisposing to the defining symptoms of bipolar disorder to help develop more targeted and effective therapeutics. The award period runs from the start date of July 12, 2024 through the ultimate completion date of February 28, 2029.
