This federal Project Grant award of $1,527,388.00 from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) will fund a hybrid Type 2 trial to evaluate the clinical efficacy and implementation potential of three technology-enabled medical interpretation modalities - remote simultaneous medical interpreting (RSMI), remote consecutive medical interpreting (RCMI), and remote consecutive video medical interpreting (RCVI).

The study will enroll 576 Spanish- and Mandarin-speaking limited English proficient (LEP) patients with stages II and III breast cancer across three diverse cancer clinics. The primary outcome will be the proportion of interpreting errors of clinical significance, with secondary outcomes examining appointment adherence, patient knowledge, patient-provider relationship, and efficiency. The research team will also conduct a Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) process evaluation to assess factors influencing intervention delivery and sustainability. The findings will inform policy and funding implications, as well as explore the potential of AI-enabled RSMI as a scalable interpretation solution.
