This federal Project Grant award of $4,456,012 from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (CFDA 93.307 Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program) supports a research project to investigate social support for transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals and its impacts on mental health and well-being.
The key objectives of this 7-month project are to: 1) use community-engaged approaches to understand how TNB individuals experience and utilize social support to address mental health concerns, 2) develop and validate a multifaceted measure of social support for TNB individuals, and 3) longitudinally assess the effects of social support within a minority stress model of TNB mental health. The research will collect qualitative and quantitative data from a total of 1,299 racially/ethnically diverse TNB participants using methods such as interviews, focus groups, and longitudinal surveys. The findings will inform the creation of a social support measure and a better understanding of how social support can mitigate mental health disparities faced by TNB individuals, particularly those from marginalized communities.
