The University of Florida (UF) Division of Sponsored Research was awarded a $295,438 Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop a novel platform for ex vivo expansion of human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The key objectives are to determine if the pro-hematopoietic factor Netrin-1 can enhance the expansion and function of human HSCs, and to identify additional angiocrine factors from human endothelial cells that can improve HSC engraftment and recovery following myelosuppressive treatment. The successful outcomes of this project could ultimately enable increased access to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for patients by expanding the availability of suitable donor cells. The project is scheduled to run from February 1, 2025 to November 30, 2027.
