The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has been awarded a $1,093,506 Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837). The grant, titled "Water Contaminants and Cardiovascular Risk: The Jackson Heart Study," will support a 4-year research project to investigate the relationship between chronic exposure to water contaminants and cardiometabolic-cardiovascular disease (CM-CVD) risk factors and outcomes in the Jackson Heart Study cohort of African-American adults in Mississippi. The project will quantify exposures to 26 public water contaminants, including disinfection byproducts, metals, and organic compounds, and measure their association with CM-CVD risk factors and 20-year incident cardiovascular disease risk. A complementary approach will examine the relation of the "molecular exposome" (1,000 circulating chemicals) to these environmental exposures and CM-CVD phenotypes. The findings from this research are expected to have direct implications for policy interventions to address the impact of water contaminants on cardiovascular health in vulnerable communities.
