The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $687,448 Project Grant (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to characterize chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and olfactory dysfunction in young children with cystic fibrosis (YCWCF) and test the hypothesis that highly effective CFTR modulator therapy (HEMT) improves these comorbidities. The study will utilize validated, non-invasive outcome measures including sinus magnetic resonance imaging, sinonasal symptom surveys, olfactory bulb volume, and olfactory function tests. UCLA has partnered with several sub-awardees, including the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, National Jewish Health, Childrens Hospital Medical Center, the University of Vermont, the University of Colorado-Denver, and the University of Iowa, to conduct patient enrollment, data collection, imaging analyses, and interpretation of results over the 5-year project period. Findings from this research aim to inform strategies for improving overall health and quality of life in YCWCF.
