The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) received a $641,544 Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837). This 4-year award will fund the development of enhanced machine learning tools to analyze complex biomedical data and improve understanding of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. Specifically, the project aims to: 1) create novel machine learning methods to reveal causal relationships between clinical features and health outcomes; 2) build deep learning frameworks to address population heterogeneity and develop personalized health management regimens; and 3) establish a flexible framework to identify important biomarkers for enhancing disease prediction. The research will leverage data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, a comprehensive study of Hispanic/Latino health in the U.S. This work is expected to elucidate clinical bases of cardiovascular and related disorders at the population and individual levels, leading to enhanced disease prevention and management strategies.
