The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $646,106 Project Grant (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) to The Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, doing business as Tulane University, to conduct research into the role of the RECK protein in preventing the progression of atherosclerosis. The project aims to determine if overexpression of RECK in vascular smooth muscle cells and macrophages can attenuate inflammation, promote stable atherosclerotic plaques, and enhance efferocytosis (clearance of dying cells) to impede the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. The research will utilize genetically modified mouse models and single-cell RNA sequencing to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which RECK mediates these atheroprotective effects. The project will run from December 2024 to November 2028.
