This $680,304 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) under the Environmental Health (CFDA 93.113) program will support research to examine the impacts of historical structural racism on neighborhood environments and child mental health outcomes. The project, titled "ILLUMINATING THE ROLE OF HISTORICAL STRUCTURAL RACISM IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD EXPOSOME AND MODERN-DAY CHILD MENTAL HEALTH," will leverage data from two large child cohorts in Michigan to: 1) evaluate how historical structural racism shaped neighborhood trajectories over time, 2) assess the role of historical structural racism in current child internalizing and externalizing behaviors among children of color, and 3) investigate the linkages between historical structural racism, the neighborhood exposome, and child mental health. As a sub-award under this grant, Texas A&M University Health Science Center will provide statistical analysis support, conduct longitudinal analyses of neighborhood data, and contribute to manuscript development. The project will run from the award date of Jul 9, 2024 through the ultimate completion date of Apr 30, 2029.
