The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) has been awarded a $690,638 Project Grant (Award ID: R01DK140144) from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The grant will fund a 4-year clinical research study to investigate the glycemic and weight loss effects of the GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide in individuals with spinal cord injury and type 2 diabetes. The research aims to evaluate semaglutide's impact on glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and body composition in this high-risk patient population. This study seeks to provide critical insights into the safety and efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies for diabetes management in the spinal cord injury community, ultimately working to address health disparities and improve patient outcomes.
