The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a 5-year, $556,684 Project Grant (CFDA 93.394 - Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research) to the Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) to develop a bioengineered therapeutic device for the prevention of lymphedema. The objective is to optimize the structural and mechanical properties of a nanofibrillar collagen conduit to promote lymphatic regeneration and normalize lymphatic flow as a preventative treatment for lymphedema.

PAVIR has subcontracted with Fibralign Corporation to conduct in vitro optimization of the scaffold properties and evaluate its performance in established mouse and rat lymphedema models. The goal is to determine the optimal scaffold characteristics, such as fibril size, elasticity, degradation rate, and capillarity, that maximize lymphatic endothelial cell function and lymphatic regeneration. If successful, this research could lead to a novel surgical prevention strategy for lymphedema, a chronic and debilitating condition that commonly affects cancer survivors.
