The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) has been awarded a $709,050 Project Grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (CFDA 93.393) program. The 5-year project will evaluate the efficacy of the FORTITUDE 2.0 eHealth intervention to reduce fear of recurrence among 800 breast cancer survivors, including 300 Black survivors, compared to attention control and usual care conditions. The study aims to assess the impact of the CBT-based intervention on reducing anxiety, depression, and healthcare utilization, as well as measure changes in allostatic load, a biomarker for chronic stress. This randomized controlled trial builds on the prior FORTITUDE 1.0 study, with enhanced intervention content, cultural adaptations, and a rigorous research design. Findings are expected to support the development of an evidence-based, scalable eHealth tool for managing fear of recurrence that can be disseminated to cancer survivors more broadly.
