The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) awarded a $1,415,556 Project Grant (CFDA 93.213 - Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health) to Butler Hospital, a division of the Care New England Health System, to conduct a pilot multi-site randomized controlled trial evaluating the use of yoga to reduce depression in adolescents. The 3-year project aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a yoga-based intervention (YBI) compared to an evidence-based treatment, group cognitive-behavioral therapy (GCBT), in a diverse sample of depressed adolescents at two geographically distinct sites in Boston, MA and Columbus, OH. The project will incorporate lessons learned from a prior pilot study to refine the YBI protocol and create a template for onboarding additional research sites. This work will prepare the team to conduct a larger, adequately powered non-inferiority trial of YBI versus GCBT in the future.
