The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded Emory University a $705,557 Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to support research on the coordination of innate and cellular mucosal immunity in SARS-CoV-2 clearance.
The research aims to determine the contribution of monocytes in promoting T cell responses and viral control within the respiratory tract, as well as define the effector mechanisms of protective mucosal T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 infection and persistence in the upper versus lower respiratory tract. This work will leverage a novel murine model to explore these questions in the context of primary and vaccine breakthrough infections, with the goal of advancing the understanding of protective mucosal innate and T cell responses that can be leveraged for next-generation SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. The award has a performance period from December 2024 through November 2029.
