This Project Grant award, issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), provides $150,000 in funding to The Ohio State University to develop a human-centered artificial intelligence (HCAI) system to improve early prediction and decision-making for sepsis.
The key products and services to be delivered under this 48-month project include:
Creating a deidentified database of electronic health records (EHRs) for patients at risk of sepsis,
Developing early sepsis risk prediction models with uncertainty quantification and active sensing,
Designing and implementing an AI-based prediction module and user interface to support physician decision-making for early sepsis intervention, and
Conducting controlled usability evaluations to measure the clinical impact and user satisfaction.
The Ohio State University is collaborating with Northeastern University on this project, which aims to address key challenges in current sepsis prediction tools and enable more effective human-AI collaboration for improved patient outcomes.
