The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $1,622,956 Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) to study the role of immunoglobulin A (IgA) autoantibodies and plasmacytoid dendritic cells in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The 5-year grant, which runs from June 2024 through April 2029, will support BRI's research to determine the mechanisms by which IgA autoantibodies enhance plasmacytoid dendritic cell production of type I interferons in response to nucleic acid-containing immune complexes in SLE. The findings are expected to lead to a better understanding of how IgA and IgA-producing B cells contribute to type I interferon production and SLE disease processes.
