The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), under its Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273), awarded a $640,010 Project Grant to Vanderbilt University to conduct a 5-year study on the perceived norms around alcohol use and HIV/STI prevention among adolescents and young adults in rural Uganda. The study aims to: 1) use qualitative methods to explore perceived norms around alcohol, HIV/STI transmission risk, and HIV/STI prevention; 2) estimate the causal effects of perceived norms on HIV/STI prevention; and 3) test the efficacy of a personalized normative feedback intervention on behavioral intentions, alcohol use, and HIV/STI prevention. The Massachusetts General Hospital will serve as a sub-awardee, providing expertise in manuscript preparation and dissemination of the study findings. This project seeks to lay the foundation for strategies to change misperceived norms and influence HIV/STI prevention uptake among adolescents and young adults in Eastern and Southern Africa.
