This $349,798 Project Grant, awarded on September 1, 2025 by the National Endowment for the Humanities' Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program (CFDA 45.149), will digitize and create item-level metadata for 1,442 pre-1600 manuscripts across 23 primarily non-R1 Midwestern institutions. The three-year initiative will be led by Indiana University Libraries and the University of Iowa, who will digitize the partner holdings. Researchers at Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Iowa, St. Mary's College, and Ohio State University will create detailed metadata for these previously uncatalogued items, many of which have not been recorded in previous bibliographical surveys. This project builds upon an earlier phase that digitized and described 663 items, all of which will be added to an open-access, IIIF-compatible repository launching in November 2024. The consortium model enables the digitization and discoverability of small manuscript collections that individual institutions could not feasibly undertake alone, bringing a wealth of previously inaccessible material to the public and scholarly community.
