This Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities' Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program, totaling $307,827, will support the University of Montana in developing indigenized collections handling, decision-making, and educational programs focused on determining cultural affiliation for objects with unclear records in its anthropological collections. Specifically, the University will hire two postdoctoral fellows, a graduate research assistant, and interns to create a mentor-based, hands-on series of outreach, ethics, and audiovisual programs enhancing tribal access to and inspiration from its cultural heritage collections. These programs will culminate in a hybrid collections management training and cultural affiliation symposium to take place by the completion date of May 31, 2024. The grant aims to build on the University's past relationship-building with tribal cultural leaders to establish standards and practices for preserving and improving access to humanities collections.
