This Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities will support the restoration and early-stage documentation of Chiricahua-Mescalero language recordings. Funded at $851,646 over three years from July 2022 to June 2025, the award will advance the Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program's goal of ensuring long-term availability of primary humanities resources. Specifically, the Fort Sill Apache Tribe will restore archival-quality digital master recordings documenting the recorded sound heritage of Apache prisoners of war from 1886. They will also advance language description by transcribing and translating the Chihene Apache dialect captured in these recordings. The project delivers linguistic infrastructure and description that is important given fewer than 20 fluent speakers remain of the critically endangered Chiricahua language. Outcomes will be preserved and made accessible long-term through the Tribe's cultural programs office.
