The Department of the Interior National Park Service awarded a $1,112,554 Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation on December 1, 2021 to acquire and preserve 42.19 acres of threatened battlefield land at Chancellorsville Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. As part of the Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants program (CFDA 15.928), the grant funding enabled the American Battlefield Trust as a sub-recipient to acquire the Dowdall's Tavern tract in fee simple. The American Battlefield Trust will hold the acquired land, while an easement for the tract will be held by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources. This award supports the program's goal of assisting states and local communities to permanently protect historic battlefield lands from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War through land acquisition and preservation covenants.
