Hummingbird Nano, Inc. received a $150,000 Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop an innovative microfluidic pressure-based methodology to significantly reduce the binding time for microcystin detection assays while increasing sensitivity. Microcystins are hepatotoxins produced by harmful algal blooms that can devastate ecological and economic systems when blooms occur on a large scale. Traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) used to screen for microcystins in water samples take two to four hours to complete and have limited sensitivity. Hummingbird Nano proposes to address these limitations through a new microfluidic approach that aims to reduce the antigen-antibody binding time that dominates ELISA testing, allowing for faster and more sensitive microcystin screening. The grant period runs from September 1, 2021 through February 28, 2022.
