The New York Historical Society will receive $669,029 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services' Museums for America program to assess and update its collections pertaining to Indigenous history from Native American and U.S. history perspectives. Consulting scholars will work with staff to update collection descriptions, create navigation tools, and train staff to integrate Indigenous histories, materials, and perspectives into their work and related programming. Additional consultants will aid in generating care protocols for sensitive items and developing staff guidance materials, including identifying instances where other scholars and tribal representatives should be consulted. The project will make a collections guide and digitized images and information available online, bringing to light material that has been largely ignored. The three-year project period runs from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2025.
