This $180,360 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (CFDA 93.273 - Alcohol Research Programs) to the Scripps Research Institute will support research on the role of somatostatin signaling in the extended amygdala to understand the comorbidity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). The overarching goals are to apply multidisciplinary approaches, including in situ hybridization, electrophysiology, chemogenetics, and viral gene transfer, to elucidate how somatostatin exerts anti-stress and alcohol-reducing effects by opposing the actions of corticotropin-releasing factor in the central amygdala and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. This 2-year award, effective September 1, 2024, will provide critical training and support to the early-career principal investigator to develop an independent research program focused on the neural mechanisms underlying the co-occurrence of PTSD and AUD.
