Dr. Mark Etherton of Massachusetts General Hospital will receive $338,509.06 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to study microvascular dysfunction in cerebral small vessel disease and stroke outcomes over four years from July 2021 through April 2026. This Project Grant will support research to elucidate the relationship between white matter microvascular function, ischemic tissue outcomes, and chronic microvascular dysfunction's contribution to structural injury and functional outcomes after stroke. The grant will also determine relationships between early plasma and neuroimaging surrogates of microvascular function in small vessel disease-mediated ischemic stroke. Results from this research are intended to advance knowledge of how white matter microvascular dysfunction impacts infarct growth and functional recovery after stroke, providing pathophysiological insights into interactions between microvascular dysfunction and cerebral small vessel disease that could support improved stroke prevention, risk stratification, and individualized therapies.
