This $196,776 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) supports a study to characterize hormone sensitivity and its effects on mood and sleep in female adolescents.
The study will collect daily assessments of mood, sleep, and ovarian steroid hormones from 50 female adolescents aged 11-14 with regular menstrual cycles and elevated depressive symptoms. The researchers will use multilevel modeling and longitudinal network analysis to evaluate the relationships between estrogen, mood symptoms, and sleep problems across the menstrual cycle. Exploratory analyses will also estimate the indirect effect of estrogen on mood via sleep. This research aims to improve understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying sex differences in depression and sleep issues that emerge after puberty, which could inform earlier identification and prevention efforts. The awardee, Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital, has extensive experience conducting pediatric mental health research and clinical care.
