The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $394,200 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to Weill Medical College of Cornell University. The grant, titled "COPDHEART: Improving Cardiovascular Health Among Black Adults with COPD," aims to adapt existing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction interventions into a multicomponent behavioral program tailored for Black adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Through a three-phase approach, the project will: 1) identify patient, provider, and interventionist barriers to engaging with a CVD prevention intervention for this population; 2) iteratively refine the COPDHEART intervention using user-centered design; and 3) determine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of COPDHEART in a pilot clinical trial. The results will inform a future large-scale randomized controlled trial to test the COPDHEART intervention, which has the potential for substantial public health impact by addressing CVD disparities among Black adults with COPD.
