This $375,408 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (CFDA 93.173 - Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders) will fund research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison that seeks to identify genetic and neuroimaging biomarkers predictive of post-stroke aphasia recovery and phenotypes.
The 5-year project aims to: 1) determine relationships between genetic, neural connectivity, and language recovery biomarkers during sub-acute to chronic stroke recovery; 2) identify genetic and MRI biomarkers predictive of chronic aphasia severity and subtypes; and 3) characterize biomarkers associated with verbal learning variability in chronic aphasia. This research is intended to support the development of a larger, multi-site study examining the interactions between neuroplasticity biomarkers and their application to aphasia prognosis and treatment efficacy.
