This $176,180 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) will support research to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying emotional responses to acute psychological stress. The principal investigator, Dr. Kraynak, will use continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS), a form of transcranial magnetic stimulation, to temporarily disrupt activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and then measure the effects on stressor-evoked brain activity, emotional reactivity, and cardiovascular responses in a cohort of 55 midlife adults. The research activities will be conducted at the University of Pittsburgh, a major recipient of federal mental health research grants. Findings from this 5-year study could enhance understanding of the neurobiology underlying emotional stress responses and inform future research on stress-related psychopathology.
