This $159,276 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) will support the expansion of the candidate's expertise in conducting independent research on scalable behavioral interventions that integrate mental health and HIV services for sexual minority individuals in low- and middle-income countries.

Specifically, the award will enable the candidate to: 1) adapt the evidence-based ESTEEM intervention to target pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake for the Guatemalan context and identify implementation strategies; 2) pilot the adapted intervention with 80 gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in Guatemala to assess preliminary effectiveness on depression, anxiety, and PrEP uptake, and explore mechanisms of change; and 3) assess the acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity of the adapted intervention and implementation strategies for future scale-up in other community clinic settings. The findings will inform the development of a future R01 proposal for a hybrid implementation-effectiveness trial to examine the scaled-up, adapted intervention.
