The Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service awarded Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health, Inc. (RSBCIHI) a $500,000 Project Grant under the Demonstration Projects for Indian Health (CFDA 93.933) program on February 1, 2025. RSBCIHI, a non-profit tribal healthcare organization, will use the funding to expand and enhance its existing Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, professional training, peer support, harm reduction, and community education and prevention services for opioid use disorder (OUD). The project aims to: 1) increase access to MAT for individuals with OUD; and 2) decrease illicit opioid use and prescription opioid misuse among the 85,471 American Indian/Alaska Native youth and adults residing in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, California. Key objectives include screening 1,434 individuals annually for non-medical drug use, delivering MAT services to 15 OUD patients per year, providing MAT training to 15 staff members annually, and delivering culturally-appropriate prevention and awareness education to 750 community members each year. The project will also focus on disseminating naloxone and fentanyl test strips, and distributing medication lock boxes to MAT patients and community members.
