The Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service awarded the Eastern Shoshone Tribe a $500,000 five-year Project Grant under the Demonstration Projects for Indian Health (CFDA 93.933) program. The grant will fund the development and expansion of culturally responsive community education and awareness initiatives focused on opioid misuse and opioid use disorder (OUD) prevention, treatment, and recovery on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Key goals include increasing awareness and education, creating comprehensive family support teams, and reducing unmet treatment needs and opioid overdose deaths through medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The project will be guided by Shoshone cultural values and traditions. This award aims to address the significant opioid crisis impacting the Eastern Shoshone Tribe's community, where opioid prescription and overdose rates far exceed national averages for American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
