The Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN) in Shawnee, Oklahoma has been awarded a $500,000 Project Grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Indian Health Service under the Demonstration Projects for Indian Health program (CFDA 93.933). The award will fund the CPN Community Opioid Intervention Prevention Program (COIPP) from February 1, 2025 through January 31, 2030.

The COIPP project aims to address the opioid overdose crisis in the CPN tribal community by developing and executing a culturally appropriate, family-focused strategic plan. Key objectives include expanding community education and awareness of opioid prevention, treatment and recovery activities, increasing use of culturally appropriate interventions and medication-assisted treatment, providing comprehensive prevention/treatment/recovery services, and implementing harm reduction initiatives. The project will serve American Indian/Alaska Native people and their families within the CPN health service area, with the goal of reducing opioid overdose deaths and promoting overall behavioral health and wellness in the tribal community.
