This Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under the Promotion of the Humanities Professional Development program (CFDA 45.163) provided $163,742 to Plimoth Patuxet Museums Inc. to deliver the "Ancient Stories, New Neighbors" summer institute from July 24 to August 6, 2022. The institute aimed to decolonize narratives of Indigenous homelands and 17th century New England through a case study approach using Mourt's Relation and other primary sources from archaeology, landscape studies, material culture, oral histories and documents. Bringing together 25 K-12 educators from classrooms, field sites, archives and museums, the program was hosted at Plimoth Patuxet Museums' campus in Plymouth, Massachusetts to reveal how the Indigenous-colonial regional landscape evolved through collaboration and conflict in the 1600s. The NEH grant supported this two-week, in-person professional development opportunity for teachers to better teach American history and culture.
