APPLICATION PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO STUDY AND RECOMMEND A PROVEN TECHNOLOGY OR COMBINATION OF TECHNOLOGIES THAT ALLOW THE EXISTING ACE F40 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES TO BE CONVERTED TO NEAR-ZERO EMISSION UNITS WHILE STILL PROVIDING THE NECESSARY POWER AND RANGE TO OPERATE ACES SERVICE BETWEEN STOCKTON AND SAN JOSE. THE PROJECT WILL UTILIZE TWO (2) NONFUNCTIONAL LOCOMOTIVES FOR REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT. THE PROJECT WILL BE CONDUCTED IN TWO-THREE PHASES AND WILL ALSO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL WORK TO DEVELOP THE FINAL RECOMMENDATION.; ACTIVITIES PERFORMED: FUNDS WILL COVER THE COST OF IDENTIFYING A PREFERRED APPROACH (OR APPROACHES) FOR ALTERNATIVE PROPULSION TECHNOLOGIES FOR CONVERTING THE ACES EXISTING F40 LOCOMOTIVE DIESEL FLEET.; EXPECTED OUTCOMES: FUNDING WILL ALLOW FOR THE COMPLETION OF SEVERAL DELIVERABLES: TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY AND COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS NEAR ZERO-EMISSIONS PILOT IMPLEMENTATION PLAN AND PROCUREMENT/IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY PLAN. THESE DELIVERABLES WILL ALLOW ACE TO DETERMINE IF THE ACE F40 LOCOMOTIVE DIESEL ENGINES WILL BE REPLACED WITH BATTERY-ELECTRIC OR HYDROGEN FUEL CELLS OR OTHER EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES TO PROVIDE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE EXISTING TRACTION MOTORS.; INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: SAN JOAQUIN REGIONAL RAIL COMMISSION (SJRRC) AND THE RIDERS THAT RELY ON ITS SERVICE WILL BENEFIT FROM THE PROJECT STUDY ALLOWING SJRRC TO IDENTIFY NEAR-ZERO EMISSION TECHNOLOGIES THAT WILL SUPPORT THE CURRENT ACE SERVICE AS WELL AS THE VALLEY RAIL SERVICE.; SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: NONE
