Spring Hill College was awarded a $376,330 project grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities under the Promotion of the Humanities Professional Development program (CFDA 45.163) to conduct a five-day Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop titled "From Clotilda to Community: The History of Mobile, Alabama's Africatown." The workshop will immerse K-12 educators of all grades in the history of the 110 survivors of the slave ship Clotilda, their descendants, and the post-Civil War community of Mobile's Africatown. The Landmarks of American History and Culture program aims to promote better teaching of American history and culture through intensive workshops and institutes for educators. This grant-funded workshop will further that goal by educating teachers on the little-known but important story of Africatown and its origins with the Clotilda survivors.
