This Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will support Tufts University in developing and delivering civic humanities curriculum through its Civic Studies Program and Tufts University Prison Initiative of Tisch College (TUPIT). Totaling $133,437, the award began on February 1, 2021 and will conclude on January 31, 2024. Under the NEH's Promotion of the Humanities Teaching and Learning Resources and Curriculum Development program, Tufts University faculty will create new syllabi and teach courses in the humanities to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals working towards a bachelor's degree. Courses will be delivered inside prisons, at a re-entry-focused community center, and on Tufts' campus, sometimes alongside currently enrolled students. The funding will also allow Tufts to hold a conference on civic humanities and decarceration, as well as support scholarly and journalistic writing. This partnership aims to provide disenfranchised citizens with increased civic knowledge and engagement opportunities through humanities education.
