The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California (WTNC) received a $276,460.62 Project Grant award from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs under the Indian Economic Development federal grant program (CFDA 15.032). The grant will support the Washoe Tribe Master-Apprentice Program project from June 30, 2022 to December 31, 2023.
The goal of the project is to create new conversationally fluent Washoe language speakers at the intermediate to expert levels among younger generations of the WTNC through implementation of a master-apprentice language learning program. This will help preserve, document, and revitalize the Washoe language by enabling new generations to communicate in the language daily in academic, home, and community settings. The sub-awardee, Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California, will deliver the master-apprentice language instruction to achieve the grant's goal of intergenerational transmission of the Washoe language.
