The Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 awarded the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community $124,140 under the Surveys, Studies, Research, Investigations, Demonstrations, and Special Purpose Activities Relating to the Clean Air Act program (CFDA 66.034) with an award date of August 1, 2022 and completion date of December 31, 2023. The purpose of this project grant is to advance enhanced monitoring of particulate matter 2.5 or other National Ambient Air Quality Standards pollutants in communities with environmental justice concerns facing disproportionate exposure and health risks associated with increased COVID-19 vulnerability. Funds will be used to replace existing filter-based monitors with continuous particulate matter 2.5 monitors or otherwise enhance existing monitors to provide 24/7 real-time air quality reporting. Expected deliverables include purchasing the continuous monitors. Intended outcomes are operation of monitors in accordance with EPA requirements to collect quality-assured ambient air quality data and help ensure more Americans live and work in areas meeting high air quality standards. Direct beneficiaries are community residents with decreased risk of adverse health effects.
