This federal Project Grant award from the Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program provides $150,000 to the Sixth Street Community Center to empower community members through citizen science initiatives. The project will deliver a series of 8-10 public workshops to educate the Lower East Side community of New York City on local climate impacts, air quality monitoring, flood sensing, and data analysis. These workshops will identify and train 4 or more engaged participants as community facilitators to assist with future workshops and cultivate additional local subject matter experts on climate resilience and citizen science. To support the project, the Sixth Street Community Center will install air quality monitors and flood sensors at multiple sites in the community. The expected outcomes include community members gaining the ability to vocalize climate and air quality issues, access and interpret public data, identify trends and hazardous conditions, and utilize handheld air quality monitors. The project will also increase environmental data collection and advocacy capacity for environmental health and climate resilience in the Lower East Side community.
