The Environmental Protection Agency Region 2 awarded a $5.7 million Project Grant to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation under the Long Island Sound Program (CFDA 66.437) to support implementation of the Long Island Sound Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan through September 2026. The Department will use the funding to complete a solute transport model for the western portion of Long Island Sound to simulate groundwater transport processes and estimate current nitrogen loading rates and concentrations in the aquifer. The model will be used to simulate changes in nitrogen loading in response to proposed wastewater management actions. Additionally, the Department will develop datasets on current and historic land uses relevant to nitrogen loading in coastal wetlands to incorporate as nitrogen source terms in the numerical models. The work supports the Long Island Sound Program's goals of implementing the Long Island Sound Study Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and assisting Connecticut and New York in plan implementation.
