This Project Grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Research Program provides $1,499,979 to Clarkson University to develop and validate a nanosensing technology integrated with a nano-remediation platform to monitor and degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water. The project activities include: 1) validating the PFAS measurement technology, 2) integrating the nano-catalytic degradation platform with the nanosensor technology and testing the integrated performance, and 3) deploying a prototype to demonstrate the sensing and degradation capabilities in groundwater, wastewater, and surface water. Clarkson University is collaborating with three subrecipients: Stevens Institute of Technology, University of Buffalo, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln, each receiving subawards of $300,000, $150,000, and $300,000 respectively to contribute specialized expertise in areas such as quantum Raman detection, electrochemical and Raman systems testing, and photocatalytic material development. The project aims to deliver a field-ready technology to quantify, reduce, and mitigate PFAS contamination, with direct benefits to water users in the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and the wider rural New York region, as well as industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants, human health, and the environment.
