The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $800,000 Pollution Prevention (P2) Grants Program (CFDA 66.708) project grant to the University of Illinois to provide technical assistance for reducing exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in disadvantaged communities. The project will:
- Develop criteria and tools to help 115 food service businesses (including restaurants, churches, and soup kitchens) in disadvantaged communities identify and purchase PFAS-free foodware products.
- Conduct on-site assessments for 30 food businesses in disadvantaged communities.
- Deliver trainings on purchasing safer, more sustainable PFAS-free foodware for 115 businesses.
The project aims to improve human health and the environment in disadvantaged communities by reducing PFAS exposures, drinking water contamination, and landfill/compost pollution. The University of Illinois is collaborating with subrecipients Illinois Green Business Association, Takeout 25, and Seven Generations Ahead to execute the technical assistance activities.
