The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has been awarded a $248,751 Project Grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) program. The purpose of this grant is to establish a Standing Committee on AI Technologies and Emerging Implications (SCAITEI) to track and analyze advances in AI and their broader impacts. The SCAITEI will explore technical, societal, ethical, and policy issues related to AI, focusing on national competitiveness, security, and responsibilities within the AI research community. Additionally, the grant will support core research activities of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB), including planning meetings and developing studies on AI and computing technologies. The overall goal is to provide a platform for in-depth exploration of AI's implications and guide decision-making for stakeholders across sectors. The grant award period is from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025.
