- This $199,669 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program will fund a rapid assessment of indoor and outdoor air quality in 20 Maui, Hawaii residential households affected by the 2023 wildfires. The project team from Harvard University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa will measure levels of particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to evaluate the impact of the fire-related air pollutants....
- This $100,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CFDA 47.041 - Engineering) will support field research to collect, archive, and characterize residual ash, transported ash, and particulate matter from the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. The research aims to quantify the concentration and speciation of toxic elements in airborne particulate matter collected during and following the fires. Key...
- The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded a $100,000 Project Grant (CFDA 11.609 - Measurement Science and Engineering Research Grant Programs) to Jensen Hughes Inc. to develop an improved computational fire modeling tool using the NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The key activities include: Implementing an improved simplified scaling-based pyrolysis model in the NIST FDS to enhance fire growth predictions. Conducting and documenting heat transfer experiments for...
- The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded a $230,000 Project Grant under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) federal grant program to Oregon State University (OSU). The purpose of this 3-year grant is to collect data on firebrand generation from full-scale structure burns and develop empirical models to predict the amount and size of firebrands generated based on factors such as wind speed and building materials. The grant activities...
- The Fire Protection Research Foundation, a non-profit organization, was awarded a $698,140 Project Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER, CFDA 97.083) program on August 7, 2023. The goal of the SAFER Grant Program is to assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities to respond to emergencies and provide adequate fire and emergency protection for communities. As the research arm of the National...
PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS GRANT IS TO FUND PART OF THE CONSUMER PRODUCTS SAFETY COMMISSION LED NATIONAL SMOKE AND CO ALARM HOUSEHOLD SURVEY AND PROVIDE A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE DATA. OVERALL, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO PROVIDE A GOOD BASE OF DATA ON THIS ISSUE FOR EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF CODES AND STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF ALARMS IN HOUSEHOLDS. CREATION OF EDUCATIONAL MESSAGING TO TARGET THE ISSUES FOUND DURING THE SURVEY WILL BE AN IMPORTANT OUTCOME OF THIS EFFORT.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES WILL BE PERFORMED. THE REMAINING 53 IN-HOME SURVEYS TO MEET THE GOALS OF THE NATIONWIDE SURVEY DESIGN WILL BE CONDUCTED. AN ANALYSIS ON THE SCOPE AND STRINGENCY OF THE SMOKE AND CO ALARM CODES IN EACH MUNICIPALITY THAT WAS CONDUCTED IN THE SURVEY WILL BE CONDUCTED TO FRAME THE REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH COMMUNITY TO BE COMPARED TO THE ACTUAL INSTALLED ALARMS. A FINAL REPORT THAT INCLUDES ALL THE RESULTS FROM THE SURVEY WILL BE DELIVERED BY THE END OF THE GRANT.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE EXPECTED OUTCOME IS TO GATHER RELEVANT NATIONWIDE DATA ON SMOKE AND CO ALARM INSTALLATION, AND OPERATIONAL STATE. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE DATA WILL BE USED TO IMPROVE SMOKE ALARM INSTALLATION CODES AND STANDARDS, IDENTIFY THE KNOWLEDGE BASE OF US HOUSEHOLDS, ASSESS THE COMPLIANCE WITH RELEVANT CONDES AND STANDARDS, AND SUGGEST AREAS FOR IMPROVED MESSAGING ON SMOKE AND CO ALARMS TO RESIDENTS.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: FIRE RESEARCHERS AND SAFETY ORGANIZATION, AND CODES AND STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT STAKEHOLDERS WILL BENEFIT FROM REAL-WORLD DATA ON SMOKE AND CO ALARMS IN HOUSEHOLDS. THIS MAY LEAD TO CODES AND STANDARDS CHANGES TO IMPROVE PUBLIC SAFETY, IT MAY ALSO LEAD TO NEW-TAILORED FIRE SAFETY MESSAGING CAMPAIGNS DESIGNED TO CORRECT OR RE-ENFORCE THE PUBLIC?S UNDERSTANDING OF THE CRITICAL ROLE SMOKE AND CO ALARMS PLAY IN MAKING HOMES SAFER.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: EUREKAFACTS INC, IS THE SUBAWARDEE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE IN-HOME SURVEYS AND ANALYSIS OF THE APPLICABLE REGULATIONS. THEY HAVE BEEN THE SUBAWARDEE FOR PREVIOUS NIST CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EFFORT ALONG AS BEING THE PRIMARY CONTRACTOR TO THE CPSC FOR DEVELOPING AND CONDUCTION THE SURVEY.
